We’re gearing up for 2025 Topps Baseball with the card company unveiling the design with a little more than month to go before the release.

It’s reminiscent of 1982 Topps, the hockey stick cards, while adding a little more flair.

A new addition is the small field at the bottom of the card where a dot denotes the player’s position. This seems to be one of the biggest gripes of the card design, so far, from collectors.

But, I’ve always felt that you need to see the cards in hand before forming an opinion.

What works:

  • Borders: Topps flagship needs borders to make the parallels stand out. There have been a few releases last decade that took away the borders and there’s probably a good reason why that was short-lived. Bonus: I like how Aaron Judge’s helmet peeks over the border to give the card a 3-D element.
  • Team colors: Based on the several images Topps has shown, the bars that runs across the left side of the card change based on the team colors. I’m always a huge fan of adding team color-specific elements to cards.
  • Big names: The name looks to be big enough to read.

What doesn’t work:

  • Team name: The transparant team name gets washed out by the bars
  • White borders: There’s nothing wrong with white borders, but I love when there is color to them. 2015 and 2024 were my favorite recent designs and they both have color borders in common.
  • No position: I miss having the position written out. I’m all for trying something new, but what happens to guys who are DH or players at multiple positions? I guess we’ll find out when the product comes out on Feb. 12.

What do you think of the 2025 Topps Baseball Series 1 design?
